What is the prostate gland?
The prostate gland is a male organ that is located at the base of the urinary bladder. It is a gland that covers the initial part of the urethra, which is the passage through which urine passes into the penis and out of the body. The prostate gland is responsible for a couple of functions. It allows for the right kind of pressure on the urethra to enable proper urination. It also produces some substances that are necessary to be present in the semen. These include minerals and sugar that are required for the semen to contain to be able to adequately transfer and transport the sperms from the male into the female. The one that needs to be noted is the fact that prostate gland is not something that is a must-have for the man. If there is no pressure on the urethra, adequate fluid pressure will enable urination anyways and the only issue that is likely to happen if the semen does not have minerals is the shorter life of the sperms. Therefore while it has a function, one can do without it.
That is one reason why prostate glands are recommended to be removed if there is any issue that is associated with the gland that is dangerous. And therefore removal of the gland if prostate cancer has been detected is one of the first options that one considers. On the other side if the issue is only concerning the enlargement or inflammation then physicians and surgeons do not recommend removal since any surgery brings with itself issues that are associated with post surgery. And therefore the exact issue that is bothering the patient is first understood before the decision is taken to take medication or perform surgery. In case there is surgery that has been done due to a cancer that has been detected then post surgery treatment continues.
The prostrate gland is a gland that is present only in men and therefore obviously the condition can only affect them. In fact just as women fight the issues of menopause after a certain age, men face the issues related to prostate and other associated problems after fifty years of age.
An enlarged prostate gland is one of the prostate issues that men can face. A condition such as this leads to frequent urination that is low in quantity. Extreme cases cause the patient to get up frequently in the night and go to the washroom. Sometimes incontinence also occurs, something that can be a big embarrassment.
It is a fact that after a certain age one needs to be careful about what one does with his health and there are various issues pertaining to bone health, prostate health, hormonal disturbances and more that happen. The prostate gland in men is one source of concern that should be watched out against.
